Anthropic donated Agent Skills to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation. What the SKILL.md standard is, who maintains it now, and what changes for teams.

Agent Skills is the open standard for packaging what an AI agent needs to know for a specific task: a folder with a SKILL.md file of instructions, plus any scripts or reference files. On October 22, 2026, Anthropic donated the standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), the Linux Foundation project that already hosts the Model Context Protocol. Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, have integrated it.

## What is Agent Skills?

Anthropic built skills while working on Claude Code. In its words, Claude Code "handled general knowledge work well, but often lacked the procedural knowledge that real business tasks need." Skills fill that gap. Anthropic launched them in October 2025 and published Agent Skills as an open standard in December 2025, with its own GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain.

The format is small. A skill is a directory with a required SKILL.md file. The file opens with YAML frontmatter, where only two fields are required:

---
name: pdf-processing
description: Extract PDF text,
  fill forms, merge files.
  Use when handling PDFs.
---

The name must be lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, up to 64 characters, and must match the folder name. The description can run to 1,024 characters and should say what the skill does and when to use it. Optional scripts/, references/ and assets/ folders hold code, docs and templates.

Image: Diagram of how an AI agent loads an Agent Skill in three stages: name and description at startup, the full SKILL.md instructions when the skill is activated, and files in scripts, references and assets only when the task needs them

Agents load skills in stages. At startup they read only each skill's name and description, about 100 tokens per skill. The full SKILL.md loads when a task activates the skill, and the spec recommends keeping it under 5,000 tokens and 500 lines. Extra files load only when needed.

## What did Anthropic donate to AAIF?

Anthropic is handing over the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals. David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag are the Lead Maintainers.

AAIF was co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI, and Anthropic donated MCP to it earlier. Skills now sit next to MCP under the same neutral governance, so both halves of the agent stack, skills for know-how and MCP for tools, share one home.

Anthropic reports that 1 million skills have been published and nearly 280 million installed so far. Those are Anthropic's figures, and the post doesn't say how they were counted.

## Which other projects joined AAIF?

Image: Diagram of the four projects the Agentic AI Foundation added on October 22, 2026: Agent Skills from Anthropic, Open Responses from OpenAI, OpenEnv from Hugging Face and OpenSandbox from Alibaba, joining MCP, A2A, AGENTS.md, goose, agentgateway and Agent Router

The same day, AAIF announced three more projects at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose:

- Open Responses from OpenAI, an open specification based on the OpenAI Responses API, so a request can run across model providers with minimal translation.
- OpenEnv from Hugging Face, a framework and hub for reinforcement learning environments, exposed as containerized services.
- OpenSandbox from Alibaba, a sandbox platform with Docker and Kubernetes runtimes for coding agents, GUI agents, evaluation and code execution.

With these four, AAIF hosts 10 projects, up from three at launch in December 2025. The others are MCP, A2A, AGENTS.md, goose, agentgateway and Agent Router.

## What changes for teams that write skills?

The format itself isn't changing with the move, and Anthropic says you can keep using the standard, or contribute to it, without joining AAIF.

What changes is who decides the next version. Anthropic has proposed a roadmap with versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for people who write and install skills. Feedback on spec changes goes through the project's Discord and GitHub.

The security guidance is the item to watch. A skill can ship scripts that an agent runs, so installing one deserves the same review as installing a package. The QM harness, for example, only promotes skills org-wide through an admin gate. Until the spec has its own guidance, the safe default is to read every skill before you install it, and to validate the format with the spec's skills-ref validate tool.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need to join AAIF to use Agent Skills?

No. Anthropic says you can keep using the standard, or contribute to it, without joining the Agentic AI Foundation.

### Which tools support Agent Skills?

Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms have integrated it, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, along with Claude Code where skills started.

### How are Agent Skills different from MCP?

A skill packages instructions, scripts and reference files that teach an agent how to do a task. MCP is a protocol that connects an agent to external tools and data. Both are now AAIF projects.

### Who maintains Agent Skills now?

Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies, acting as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers.
